Monash LSS Update - Monday 2nd April

Careers
1. Barrister Shadowing Program

The Monash LSS Shadowing Program provides an opportunity for Monash law
students to gain an insight into a career at the Bar.

The program gives students a chance to see the inner workings of a barrister's work life and aims to give students a more in depth view of a particular area of law in a practical context. Students nominate areas of law that are of particular interest to them and are then paired with a barrister practising in one of those areas to complete one week of shadowing during the midyear break. Ultimately, the experience will depend on the student and barrister involved but in the past students have assisted with research, drafted memoranda of argument, attended meetings and observed court proceedings as part of their experience.

Areas of practice include: Insolvency, Commercial, Tax, Family, Personal Injury, Human Rights, Administrative, Criminal, Environment and Planning.

Program dates

Students will shadow a barrister during the midyear break in one of the following weeks:

Monday 25th June – Friday 29th June
Monday 2nd July – Friday 6th July
Monday 9th July – Friday 13th July
Monday 16th July – Friday 20th July

Please note that the middle two weeks are a court vacation but the Magistrates' court will still be hearing cases.

The clerkship is aimed at law students in their penultimate year of university.
