1. 2012 Social Justice & Equity Handbook – now online

2. Coming Week 8: Exam & Study Skills (Open Book, Closed Book and Policy Writing for Exams) Seminar!

 

We're coming into week 8 - which in law-student speak, roughly equates to "Ahhh **** I'm so behind!!" Well, the LSS is here to take (part of) the hard work out with you, by presenting the bi-annual "Study & ExamSkillsSeminar".

 

A number of (HD) student-tutors will present you with handy tips in preparing for, and later sitting your exams to help you cut down on the exam stress and (maybe even) the hours of studyahead.

 

This seminar is ideal for FIRST YEAR STUDENTS, INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS and all those who struggle with closed book exams, open book exams, policy essays and general law-exam technique.  Definitely not a seminarto be missed, come along to ensure that you're well prepared for the end of year exams!

3. Coming Week 9: MEDITIATION Session for Mental Health Week!

 

As part of Mental Health Week, the Monash LSS will be running a fun meditation session in Week 9 of Semester 1, in the Basement of the Law Building. The session is FREE for registered members.

4. Student Tutorial Program (proudly sponsored by Clayton Utz) – NO Tutorials during Mid Semester Break

 

The Monash Law Students’ Society is proud to present its Student Tutorial Program for compulsory and quasi-compulsory units offered by the Faculty of Law to registered members. The program is proudly sponsored by Clayton Utz.

 

The Society runs weekly tutorials for compulsory and quasi-compulsory subjects offered by the Faculty of Law for registered members. Tutors have previously excelled in the subject and will give tips and tricks as to how best approach assessments.

 

There will be no tutorials run during Mid Semester Break.

5. Monash LSS Book Store – Books for Sale Now Online

 

In 2012, the Monash Law Students’ Society is proud to announce the launch of its electronic Book Store for registered members. The service allows students to connect with each other in order to purchase and sell used textbooks. Each book listed in 2012 reading guides provides a list of sellers for the relevant book. 6. Submissions closing for Clayton’s Law vol 2

 

Last week to get your submissions in for Vol 2 of Clayton’s Law!

 

We are always interested in receiving articles from anyone interested in writing for future editions of Clayton’s Law (not to mention, they make a great addition to your resume!). 7. Mishpatim Seminar in Israeli and International Law

 

The program is a 3 and a half week, 90 hour intensive program including field trips.

 

The academic aim of this seminar is to introduce students to the Israeli legal system, while focusing on current issues at the core of the Israeli legal debate. The course will allow students to examine key questions related to the identity of the Israeli state, including Jerusalem, the interaction with the Palestinian population in Israel and in the Occupied Territories, and the status of refugees. The course will include several field trips, allowing students to experience first-hand the workings of the Israeli legal system. The course includes guest lectures by some of Israel's prominent young legal scholars as well as by advocates working to promote democracy and human rights within Israel.

 

Credit points are available subject to the University. In previous years, students have obtained credit from Monash University.

8. LSS Mental Health Awareness

 

The Monash Law Students’ Society is committed to de-stigmatising mental health through annual mental health awareness events, fundraisers and provision of mental health resources to students throughout the year, particularly during the exam period. In collaboration with the Tristan Jepson Memorial Foundation, the Monash LSS is proud to announce the launch of its ‘Mental Health Awareness’ Tab, available at http://monashlss.com/education/mental-health-awareness. Be on the look out for LSS events throughout the 2012 that sponsor The Tristan Jepson Memorial Foundation and any opportunities to get involved.

9. LSS Mid-Sem Break Night at Factory

 

A good law student spends their mid-semester break trawling through legislation, analysing 400-year old cases and churning out assignments at break-neck speed. Luckily (for now), we're not good law students...

19. ALSA Conference Volunteers Needed!

If you'd like to be a part of something huge over the winter break, we've got just the thing for you. The national, annual Australian Law Students Association Conference is being held in Melbourne this July and we'd love for you to be a part of it. We're looking for volunteers to help with competitions and careers, directing out-of-staters around our great city and fun-augmentation at our sports day. So if you're free from 9 to 15 July and would like to be part of something special shoot an email off to [email protected]

20. Interested in theatre?

 

The Faculty of Law, in association with the Law Institute of Victoria and the Victorian Bar Council, will be holding a memorial dinner for the late Susan Campbell, former professor and teaching pioneer within the Monash Law faculty. The evening, to be held on the 20th June at the St Kilda Town Hall, will involve 400+ people drawn from within the legal profession. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court will launch the ‘Susan Campbell Clinical Legal Education Visiting Fellow and Future Fund’ during the night. 

As such, the faculty has proposed that Monash law students may be interested in performing as part of the evening. We are thus looking for expressions of interest from Monash law students who may be keen for forming/producing and/or participating in a one off performance at the dinner. The students would have ultimate control of the content and execution of the performance, allowing for a wide degree of creativity.
