2012 Great Law Week Debate

“Political bias in the media should be banned”

Date: Time: Where:

Wednesday 16th May, 2012 6.00pm – 7.30pm

Monash University Law Chambers 555 Lonsdale St, Melbourne

Free By Monday 14th May, 2012 [email protected] (03) 9905 2630

Witness a team of prominent Monash Law Alumni battle it out with current Monash Law Students, over this highly controversial topic at the annual Great Law Week Debate.

Previous president of the Monash Association of Debaters and 2012 World Universities Debating Championship winner Kiran Iyer (Law/Arts) will lead the student team to argue “Political bias

in the media should be banned”, supported by Madeline Schultz (Law/Science) who was a semi- finalist in the 2012 World Universities Debating Championships and Duncan Wallace (Law/Arts) former winner of the Monash Junior Moot and a semi-finalist of the Commonwealth AAT Moot.

Proving this point won’t be easy against the Monash Law Alumni team consisting of Fiona Prowse (BA, LLB 2012) who won the 2011 World Universities Debating Championship, Channel 7 investigative reporter who specialises in freedom of information Louise Milligan (BA (Hons) 1999, LLB 1999) and Justin Quill (BA 1998, LLB

1998) director of Kelly Hazell Quill Lawyers and one of Australia’s most experienced media law practitioners.

Overseeing the Great Law Week Debate as moderator is Monash Law graduate Will Fowles (BCom/LLB 2004), who is the Principal of Piper Capital, a boutique hospitality and property investment company. Will is also a member of the MCC Committee.

Law Week Event: 'Judicial war'?: Human Rights Lawyers At Risk Around the
World

Date: Wednesday 16 May 2012
Time: 7pm
Venue: DLA Piper, Level 21, 140 William Street

A lawyer in Australia can stand up in court without feeling personally at
risk. Sadly, the same is not the case everywhere.

Lawyers in some countries are regularly subjected to threats against
themselves or their families, are physically attacked and even abducted and
forcibly "disappeared" simply for doing their jobs. In Colombia alone, in
recent times as many as 25 year lawyers have been killed each year.

Join Debbie Mortimer, Chair of the Human Rights Committee, Victorian Bar and
Jomary Ortegon, lawyer with CCAJAR, Colombia (via skype) for a discussion of
the threats faced by human rights lawyers in Colombia and around the world,
and what assistance the Australian legal community can offer.

Jomary Ortegón Osorio specializes in constitutional law, aboriginal rights,
human rights and international humanitarian law and has worked with the José
Alvear Restrepo Lawyers' Collective (CCAJAR) for 10 years. She has litigated
high profile human rights cases before the Colombian national courts as well
as before the Inter-American and UN systems.

CCAJAR faces regular threats and intimidation and delegitimisation from the
Government level in carrying out its important work, including death threats
last month from paramilitaries for their work with displaced communities.

Debbie Mortimer SC is one of Australia's leading human rights lawyers. Her
areas of practice include civil liberties, constitutional law, discrimination
law, equal opportunity, human rights, and freedom of information. She lead
the recent High Court case against the Malaysia Solution and received the Law
Council of Australia's President's Medal in 2011.

With around 80 trained volunteers in Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, and Nepal,
Peace Brigades International provides unarmed protection for human rights
defenders by accompanying them at their homes, to court, and in the field and
by setting up networks of support through our diplomatic and international
connections.

Increasingly lawyers like Jomary are reaching out to other lawyers around the
world for support and assistance. Find out how you can support human rights
lawyers at risk.

17. Long-term volunteering opportunities!

Linkz is partnering with the Central Australian Youth Link Up Service (CAYLUS) to support their programs delivered to young Indigenous people and the broader community as a whole. This is a fantastic opportuity to gain a long-term understanding of remote community life while playing a meaningful role in the delivery of important programs and services.

What will volunteers be doing?

Volunteers will be integral to the everyday running of a popular local computer and internet room in the community, as well as providing support to the Youth Program more generally. Volunteer will be expected to work 37.5 hours a week, 30 of these being contact hours with the majority spent supervising the computer room use and helping with any issues that arise. Additionally, volunteers are encouraged to bring new ideas to the community (for example, one volunteer has implemented a sewing program with the local women).

What do the volunteers get out of it?

This extended volunteering role will give individuals a unique opportunity to play a meaningful role in a remote community, whilst also gaining considerable personal and professional development. For those looking to work in remote settings in the future, this is a great chance to see first hand the realities of remote life.

Costs & Dates

All costs for volunteers will be covered, including flights, transport and accommodation. Additionally, volunteers will recieve approx. $200/week to cover the cost of their food and will have the opportunity to travel to Alice Springs once a month.

Starting dates are around mid-June 2012, with some flexibility running until December.

For more information, or to express your interest please contact Ashton - [email protected]!

Education
18. LAW5216/5218 - Professional Practice applications closing soon

Undertaking the Law Faculty’s one-of-a-kind professional practice clinical units are a fantastic way to develop practical legal skills alongside your academic studies at Monash.

The Law Faculty offers students the opportunity to participate in its Clinical Legal Education Program, conducted at two community legal centres – adjacent to the Clayton Campus at Monash-Oakleigh Legal Service (MOLS) and in Springvale, at the Springvale Monash Legal Service (SMLS).

MOLS and SMLS offer members of the community free legal assistance on a wide range of issues (criminal matters, motor vehicle accidents, fines & infringements, family law matters, contractual and commercial disputes to name a few).

As Professional Practice students, you work with real clients with real needs. You will have the opportunity to run your own files including interviewing clients, drafting legal documents, briefing barristers, working under the supervision of leading practitioners, attending court and in some circumstances appearing on behalf of your clients. The various programs are a great way to improve employability as well as make lasting contacts and relationships within the legal profession.

There are two 12-point professional practice units to choose from:

1) LAW 5216: Professional Practice 512 (located at MOLS or SMLS)

2) LAW 5218: Family Law Assistance Program – Professional Practice (located at MOLS)

We encourage you to enrol in professional practice units as soon as you have completed prerequisite units (please refer to the Unit Handbook). This will also give you the opportunity to enrol in Advanced Professional Practice units (LAW 5149) later in your degree.

Applications close4 June 2012. You can find out more information about prof-prac from past students at the LSS/BCSS AXP BBQ.
