The Law Students’ Society is proud to recognise the generations of students who have contributed to its history, culture, advocacy, events, competitions, education programs, publications and broader student life.
From Presidents and Postgraduate Directors to committee members, volunteers, competitors, editors, contributors and event organisers, LSS alumni have helped shape the Society into the institution it is today.

Law Chambers provides a space for alumni to stay connected, share updates, reconnect with former classmates and hear about future alumni events and opportunities.
The Society acknowledges the leadership of its former Presidents, whose work has helped shape the direction, culture and legacy of the LSS.

The LSS has a proud history of student leadership extending back to its earliest years. Former Presidents of the Society have gone on to make significant contributions across law, the judiciary, politics, government, public service, business, philanthropy, Indigenous affairs, education, advocacy, media, academia and community life.
The following profiles provide selected examples of the diverse pathways taken by former LSS Presidents after their time at Monash Law. They are intended to illustrate the breadth of the Society’s alumni community rather than provide an exhaustive account of its distinguished former members.
George Pappas AO
LSS President: 1964
Field: Business, higher education and public service
George Pappas AO was the inaugural President listed on the LSS honour roll. He went on to become a prominent business leader, public servant and university leader.
His career reflects the contribution Monash Law alumni have made beyond traditional legal practice, including through leadership in business, higher education, civic institutions and public administration.
Alan Schwartz AO
LSS President: 1975
Field: Business, philanthropy and public policy
Alan Schwartz AO served as LSS President in 1975. He subsequently built a distinguished career across business, philanthropy and public policy.
His involvement in enterprise, charitable organisations and civic life reflects the broad contribution former LSS student leaders have made to Australian public and community life.
Dr Madeline Garlick
LSS President: 1992
Field: International law, refugee protection and human rights
Dr Madeline Garlick served as LSS President in 1992 before pursuing an internationally distinguished career in refugee law, human rights and international protection.
She went on to hold senior roles with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, including as Chief of the Protection Policy and Legal Advice Section within UNHCR’s Division of International Protection in Geneva. Her international work has also included service with the United Nations in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Cyprus, work as UNHCR Assistant Representative for Protection in Iraq, and responsibility for UNHCR’s liaison with European Union institutions from 2004 to 2013.
Garlick has also contributed to international refugee-law scholarship and education, including teaching at the Refugee Studies Centre at the University of Oxford and Sciences Po. Her work at UNHCR has contributed to international policy concerning refugee protection and alternatives to the detention of asylum seekers and refugees.
Her career demonstrates the global contribution of LSS alumni and represents an outstanding example of a former student leader progressing to senior international leadership in refugee law, human rights and humanitarian protection.
Duncan Murray
LSS President: 1993
Field: Business, Indigenous affairs, education and community development
Duncan Murray served as LSS President in 1993 before pursuing a career spanning law, investment, business leadership and the not-for-profit sector.
He later served for six years as Group CEO of the Cape York Partnership, working within an Indigenous organisation focused on economic and social development in Cape York. His involvement in Indigenous affairs has also included governance roles connected with Djarragun College and Bama Services, organisations working respectively in education and Indigenous employment and enterprise.
Murray’s career demonstrates the contribution former LSS leaders can make through long-term involvement in Indigenous education, economic participation, organisational leadership and community development.
The Hon Josh Frydenberg
LSS President: 1994
Field: Politics, government and public life
The Hon Josh Frydenberg served as LSS President in 1994. He later entered public life and served as the Federal Member for Kooyong, Treasurer of Australia and Deputy Leader of the Federal Parliamentary Liberal Party.
His career represents one of the most prominent examples of an LSS alumnus progressing from student leadership at Monash Law to senior national political and government leadership.
Charlie Pickering
LSS President: 1998
Field: Media, comedy and broadcasting
Charlie Pickering served as LSS President in 1998. After studying law, he pursued a career in comedy, television and broadcasting and became a prominent figure in Australian media.
His career illustrates the diversity of pathways available to Monash Law graduates and the ways in which the skills developed through legal education and student leadership can be applied well beyond traditional legal practice.
Anna Brown OAM
LSS President: 2002
Field: Law, human rights and advocacy
Anna Brown OAM served as LSS President in 2002. She subsequently built a prominent career as a lawyer, advocate and leader in human rights and law reform.
Her career demonstrates the contribution LSS alumni have made through legal advocacy, community leadership, public-interest law and efforts to achieve broader social and legal reform.
