Street Law Program

Overview

Monash Street Law is an initiative that aims to dismantle barriers to justice through community legal education. It is a collaborative program between the Monash Law Faculty and Monash Law Clinics, which involves student facilitators delivering presentations on legal topics to a diverse range of audiences.

Our mission

Monash Street Law’s objective is to empower and equip the community with an understanding of basic key rights and laws. This program strives to reach marginalised and disadvantaged communities, who often face greater barriers to justice.

About the program

Facilitators are assigned to small presentation groups that are directly overseen by deputies throughout the year. Students also receive guidance and feedback from Jeff Giddings and Sally Andersen from Monash Law, who work closely with students, sharing their expertise, experience and wealth of knowledge on legal issues.

Prior to presenting, facilitators undertake numerous training workshops designed to develop key presentation and research skills. These skills are further refined at practice presentation days, where groups receive feedback from their peers and deputies.

This program also enables students to engage directly with their community through the outreach process. All facilitators are involved in sourcing presentations and have the opportunity to connect with schools, institutions and charities in their local community.

During the year, facilitators also attend a panel evening where they hear first-hand from guest speakers working in the community legal sector. This event provides students with greater insight and understanding of community law and initiatives that operate outside of university.

How to join and why

This program is open to all, at any stage in their degree. We strongly encourage those who are passionate about education, giving back to the community and social justice, to apply!

Some students involved in the Street Law program have gone on to participate in the Justice Bus. Please note that these are separate initiatives and that participating in Street Law does not guarantee participation in the Justice Bus Program.

Please contact the Officer, Fleur Anstee () if you have any further queries.

Best of luck for the year ahead and we hope to see you in the 2026 Monash Street Law Program!
