Publications

The Education Publications portfolio exists to support Monash law students through the academic, professional, and personal dimensions of law school. Through three core publications, the Law Guide, Being Guide, and Electives Guide, this portfolio aims to provide clear, practical guidance that students can return to at different stages of their degree. These publications are shaped by student experiences and informed by perspectives from across the Monash Law community. They are designed to address both the practical realities of studying law and the less visible aspects of the student experience, including wellbeing, identity, and balance. Together, they seek to make law school more navigable, transparent, and sustainable.

Law Guide

The Law Guide provides structured guidance for students as they progress through their law degree. It covers key academic skills such as studying effectively, approaching legal writing, and preparing for assessments and exams, while also offering insight into navigating common challenges faced by law students. In addition to academic support, the Law Guide explores pathways beyond the classroom, including early career planning, internships, and developing a professional presence. Its focus is on equipping students with the knowledge and confidence to engage with both their studies and their future careers with intention. You can view the Law Guide here.

Being Guide

The Being Guide centres on the lived experience of being a law student. It engages with questions of wellbeing, self-management, and identity, recognising that success in law school is closely tied to how students care for themselves alongside their academic commitments. Released in the second half of the year, the Being Guide will be accompanied by a panel event designed to foster open discussion and reflection around its themes. This event aims to create a space for connection and conversation within the Monash Law community, complementing the ideas explored in the publication.

Electives Guide

The Electives Guide supports students in making informed decisions about their elective choices. Drawing on student reflections and experiences, it provides insight into course content, expectations, and workload, helping students choose electives that align with their interests and goals. An updated Electives Guide is coming your way—with more updated information! Follow us on @monashlss to stay updated. In the meantime, you can view the current version of the Electives Guide here.

Postgraduate Guide

The Postgraduate Guide is designed specifically for the JD and postgraduate students navigating the unique structure, pace and expectations of postgraduate legal study. Postgraduate law can be fast-moving and strategically demanding. This Guide aims to provide clear information, structured academic guidance and practical insights to help you make confident decisions about your studies, opportunities and wellbeing. We hope it serves not only as a source of information, but as a steady point of reference throughout your time at Monash Law.
