The annual Just Leadership Program (JLP) is an initiative of the Monash LSS Social Justice & Equity portfolio. This prestigious and competitive program aims to facilitate collaboration, curiosity and passion in social justice and equity issues in the law, affording selected students the opportunity to listen to, learn from, and network with high profile speakers.
Participants attend ten seminars (including the Introductory Night, and Graduation and Public Lecture) focused on a range of current social justice issues. These seminars are conducted in an interactive Q&A format, allowing students to ask questions directly to our panels of esteemed guest speakers and engage in eye-opening discussions with each other.
The diversity of each panel provides participants the opportunity to gain valuable insight from industry professionals and individuals with experience in the particular social justice issue. Past speakers include the Honourable Michael Kirby AC CMG, Professor Gillian Triggs, Andrew MacLeod and Julian Burnside QC.
Participants will conclude the program with an increased understanding of each topic discussed, and enhanced leadership and collaboration skills by undertaking a group project throughout the entire program. The project will relate to one of the eight seminar topics, participants have creative freedom over this, with past projects ranging from written law reform, parliamentary submissions, and resources or interactive seminars for students.
At the conclusion of the program, participants are invited to attend a Graduation Ceremony, where one group will be awarded a bursary to support the continued improvement and completion of their project. The Graduation Ceremony is then followed by a Public Lecture delivered by an esteemed guest speaker, to which all law students are invited.
