Negotiation skills are increasingly valued within legal practice. As the cost of litigation escalates, clients are increasingly seeking to settle matters outside court. Approximately 80% of disputes are now settled by negotiation prior to trial. In everyday transactions, negotiation skills are of critical importance.
Through the Monash Law Students’ Society Negotiation Competition you will have the opportunity to apply the legal knowledge you have developed throughout your degree in a practical environment. The abilities that will be tested during this competition include effective and efficient communication, teamwork, dispute resolution strategy and decision-making whilst under pressure. This sort of applied legal knowledge can only be acquired and tested through practice, making competitions like Negotiation an integral part of your legal education.
The competition requires little legal knowledge and preparation – the focus of assessment instead being placed on communication skills, quick thinking and the ability to resolve a dispute peacefully and ethically.
We hope that the competition will prove to be an entertaining and worthwhile experience for all participants.
