International Students

Overview

你好, Namaste, Olá, Salam, Apa khabar, and hello. We are Ashhar Hassan () and Godson Rao (), your International Student Officers at the Monash Law Students’ Society for 2026

If you’re an international law student at Monash, chances are you’re juggling a lot at once. A new country, a new academic system, unfamiliar processes, and a law degree. At a broader level, the International Students’ Office represents the interests of international law students within the LSS and works closely with other portfolios and the Faculty to ensure international considerations are built into decision-making.

Our Portfolio will be running social, wellbeing, and professional events tailored to international students, providing guidance on navigating law school as an international student, and fostering a strong sense of community so that no one feels isolated, overlooked, or alone in their Monash Law journey.

International Student Guide

The 2026 International Student Guide is the first-of-its-kind initiative of the portfolio and has been designed specifically for incoming international law students at Monash.

It brings together essential information on academics, careers, wellbeing, housing, transport, visas, and student life into one clear and practical resource. The goal is to reduce guesswork and make sure students have access to the information they actually need, when they need it.

The Guide will be available in limited hard copies at the LSS office and has been published digitally below.

Welcome and Community Events

The International Students Welcome Picnic and Luncheon are designed to be the starting point of community for international students at Monash Law. Held early each semester, these relaxed and welcoming events are often a student’s first LSS experience. With good food, conversations, and light activities, they create a low-pressure space to meet students across year levels and programs.

International Student Clerkship Night

The International Student Clerkship Event is one of our inaugural projects for this year. As international students, it can be tricky to navigate the Clerkship process and our goal is to demystify the application process and to provide you with a forum whereby any queries can be answered.

Therefore, we are excited to bring international students across the PG and UG levels the opportunity to attend a panel specifically tailored to clerkship applications and answering questions that are common amongst international students. There will also be an opportunity to network directly with some of the firms that accept international applicants following the panel event, which we hope will provide valuable insights ahead of the Clerkship and Graduate Program application season.

PG International Chai and Coffee Event

The PG International Chai and Coffee Event is an initiative designed to bring postgraduate students together in a relaxed and welcoming environment over a cup of chai or coffee. The event aims to create an informal space where international students can connect with one another, share their experiences, and build meaningful relationships within the postgraduate community.

For many international students, navigating a new academic system, culture, and professional landscape can be challenging. Events like this help foster a sense of belonging by encouraging conversation, cultural exchange, and peer support. By centring the gathering around something as simple and familiar as chai and coffee, the event creates a comfortable setting that naturally invites dialogue and interaction.

International Graduates Panel and Networking Night

The International Graduates Panel and Networking Night is the flagship professional event run by the International Students’ Office. It is designed for international LLB and postgraduate students exploring post-law school pathways. The panel features international alumni and early-career professionals who share honest, practical insights on clerkships, graduate roles, visas, and alternative career options. A structured and approachable networking session follows, helping students build confidence, make meaningful connections, and leave with clear, actionable next steps for their careers.

International Students Dinner

The International Students Dinner gives international law students a proper pause during a busy semester. Held early in the semester, this relaxed sit-down dinner brings together undergraduate and postgraduate students in a low-key setting focused on conversation, connection, and community. With small-group seating, a brief welcome, and thoughtfully catered meals accommodating all dietary requirements, the event offers a genuine chance to decompress and meet others without formalities or pressure.

Law Chambers Cultural Exchange Night

The Cultural Exchange Night is an inaugural event introduced this year to celebrate the diversity of the postgraduate community and promote meaningful intercultural engagement. The event is designed to bring together both international and domestic students in a welcoming and inclusive environment where they can connect, share experiences, and learn from one another’s cultural backgrounds.

For many international students, adjusting to life in Melbourne and navigating a new academic and social environment can be challenging. By encouraging open conversation and interaction, the event provides a platform for students to build friendships and develop supportive networks within the university. Participants are encouraged to wear traditional or cultural attire, celebrating and sharing their cultural identities. As a newly introduced initiative, Cultural Exchange Night embodies Australia’s and Monash University’s commitment to inclusivity and cultural appreciation.

External Social Events

Throughout the year, we will run a range of subsidised off-campus social events in partnership with external venues. These include interactive experiences such as challenge rooms, immersive game nights, bowling, and other high-energy activities designed to encourage natural conversation and teamwork. Structured, low-pressure events make it easy to meet new people across cohorts while offering a genuine break from study. With limited spots available to keep the experience high-quality and social, these events often fill quickly. Book now to secure your place!

Day Trips

In addition to regular events,we  also run larger off-campus experiences that invite international students to explore Melbourne together. These flagship outings are designed to create shared memories, strengthen community, and offer a refreshing break from the usual law school routine. Think wandering through the zoo with new friends, spotting animals you’ve only seen online, sharing laughs over trivia and lunch, and enjoying a rare day where the only thing on your to-do list is deciding which enclosure to visit next.

Getting Involved and Staying Connected

Event sign-ups, updates, and announcements are shared through official LSS communication channels like Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp. Registration processes are kept simple, and capacity limits are communicated clearly.

We are glad you are here, and we look forward to building this community with you.
